How we build

Our
approach.

A few choices shape everything we build. Here they are, and why.

  1. No streaks, no red days.

Forward doesn’t count streaks or mark the days you missed. A day you didn’t log is just a day you didn’t log: it never counts against you, and there’s nothing to keep alive.

Why missed days don’t count against you →
  2. Every number comes with “about”.

Food labels, portion guesses and the calories you burn are all estimates, so we show them that way: about 250 kcal, not 250. It’s more honest, and it stops a rough number from feeling exact.

Why Forward says “about 250” →
  3. We watch the 7-day line, not today’s weigh-in.

Your weight can move 2 to 3 pounds (1 to 1.5 kg) in a day from water, salt and food, without any change in fat. Forward leads with the average of your last seven days of weigh-ins, and today’s number comes second.

  4. There’s a floor we won’t plan below.

Forward never plans a day below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 for men, the usual minimums without a health professional’s supervision. If every pace would go under that, the gentlest one eats at the floor and takes longer instead.

  5. Your goal never goes under a healthy weight.

Forward won’t accept a goal below a BMI of 18.5 for your height, the line below which adults are classed as underweight. BMI only comes into it when you set a goal, and there’s no button to override the limit.

A healthy goal weight for your height →
  6. Three paces, and none faster than about 0.75 kg a week.

You pick Gentle, Steady or Faster: 0.25, 0.5 or 0.75 kg (0.5, 1 or 1.5 lb) a week. In Forward there’s no slider and no target date to chase, because a pace you can keep beats a fast one you can’t.

See when each pace gets you to your goal →
  7. Your health data stays on your iPhone.

What you log, and what Forward reads from Apple Health, stays on your device. Apple Health access is read-only. The one exception is optional: if you turn on AI meal estimates, only the meal you ask about, your words or photo, is sent through our server to an AI provider to estimate it, and we don’t store it.

How we handle health data →
  8. No before-and-after photos, and no promises.

We don’t publish testimonials, before-and-after photos or claims like “X kg in Y weeks”. Results vary from person to person, and every number we show is an estimate.

  9. We’re not doctors, and our apps aren’t medical advice.

DayDay’s apps and tools are for general wellness. They can’t diagnose or treat anything. Talk to a doctor about medical questions, and before big changes to how you eat, move or sleep.

We keep this page in step with the apps. If something here doesn’t match what you see, tell us and we’ll fix one or the other. More about who we are and how we write is on our about page.
